Berserk

  • Berserk is an incredibly graphic dark fantasy manga by Kentaro Miura that follows the adventures of Guts, the most badass anti-hero ever conceived.

Manga? That’s weaboo faggot shit, right? Well, yeah, but this particular manga has been in production since 1990 and is leaps and bounds ahead of the usual trash in terms of artwork, story, and perhaps even literary value. Some works are capable of transcending preconceptions of genres such that they are universally enjoyable, and this is probably one of them.

Basically, Guts cuts shit up with his giant sword in an eternal quest for revenge against Griffith, his former captain who has not only betrayed him but also ascended beyond mortality to become one of the god hand, the beings that pull the strings behind the world and fulfill the dark desires that lurk in each person. As the series has been going on for twenty years (and is still ongoing), there’s much more to it than that, including Guts’ backstory and other story arcs.

If you read into it deeper, it’s also a story of humanistic free will versus causality and predestination.

Also, when I said graphic earlier, I meant it. There’s gore, nudity, and horrific, disturbing pictures of demons. It’s great.

If you want to know more about Berserk, go here (there’s an anime but it’s not as good and covers little): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserk_%28manga%29
