The Map

  • Is anybody developing a map for this? From what it seems its gonna have to be custom made for the mod to the specifications JetBoom requires and dependant on monster spawn layouts and stuff. Just curious, im not volunteering, at least not doing this alone. There should be a drawn layout before being mapped.

  • It will have to consist of a wide open area, possibly a large field with different layers (think clandestine). However, im no good with displacements so I may try helping in the contruction of the towns.

  • Yep, I think it’s time for a map to be underway.

Though before anything else, we need a map layout. Where is everything going to be in NoX RPG? Where should the creatures spawn, etc… A basic layout is a good start so mappers will get a gist of where things should be when mapping. There’s also consideration for the scale change if there is one.

  • Considering the scale of the project its probably a good idea to have a colaboration of people to help design/create the map. Ultimately JetBoom is going to have to give his input on things he would want to see in order to be able to meet what is needed before a grand design in created and then things will have to get rollin.

  • Most things like zones, monster spawns, player drop points, teleports, triggers, and transportation to other servers is done post-compile with Lua.

Each physical bsp map should have at least one main area or point of interest for brand new players to spawn at. Yes, the maps will be using a clandestine style of design.

  • One small, but good, question: Is this going to be earth? Or will it be a different planet?

    also
How many moons/stars/planets will it have in it’s solar system?
Will time take effect on the skybox etc?
Just so I know how to start my designs/give effect.

  • any size limits ?

  • Concept in very early stages, just a sneak peek.
Volcano on the left, ice on the right and (to be) forestry in the centre.
I was thinking for each element type (ice fire etc) there would be a monument in its own dedicated map area. for example fire map would be very dry with pyroclastic flows in places and areas of constant flame, and a volcano as a monument/landmark.
By monument I mean something big and daunting that players have this eery feeling about as it is always there and they know that they will, at some point, have to venture through said place. Also used as a landmark to aim for when traveling.

Ice - massive ice mountain - cave structure and town inside
Fire - group of large volcanos - settlements on the sides and a pit for boss monsters
Earth/life - BIG tree which looks really old - surrounding and on the tree are huts and houses. Trees make a foresta round it and almost act as a shield/defence system.
Air - floating structure/castle - has a town on floating land leading up to it, the further up the scarier/more deserted. Twisters and whatever surround it like a constant threat to outsiders.

  • Possibly the different areas could be limited to players whom have accuired certain skills to enter. The ice and fire areas would require the player to have some sort of elemental defence such as clothing or magic to survive in the extreme conditions. Forest would possibly be a basic area which could be divided into a regular forest for beginners, and the dark part which leads on to the depths of the forest, designed for skilled players. Air would have to be a trecherous area to get to since you may need different methods in order to reach the area.

  • It could be similar to obby, except not props, no timer, and no strafe jumps. Climb to the top, would require a lot of agility and strength, and there will be monsters on the way up (possibly even interactive physics-puzzles?).
If there are puzzles, then make a timer to reset them, or reset every time a player moves-on from that puzzle. If not, more monsters.

  • Termina Field style map (example)

  • And over each pathway would be the monuments that I mentioned earlier (by using the skybox).

  • The overworld layer could make the players smaller. Cities and caves would have entry gates (teleports to other parts of the map).

  • Is that to say: each land is on a different map(and different server), but caves, mines and other small places are just an area that player is teleported to?

  • Another thing, would it be better to make the towns themselves into the map, or to make each building, gate and wall into a prop using propper so we can place thigns much easier?

  • @Rexen:

    Why propper?
Also that would use a whole lot of entities and there would be no lighting.

  • there will probably be stationary buildings into the map itself, but players should be able to have buildings where they want as entities.

  • Layout -> Terrain -> Buildings -> Lighting -> Entities
                    /
    Caves/Lakes/Rivers/Ect.

Buildings are nice and all but you build them into the terrain, you don’t build the terrain around the buildings.

  • FYI, there’s a trick to alter the skybox texture using Lua.

Each land isn’t necessarily on a different server. Each large chunk of environment is. Remember how Tribes handled its dungeons in the newer version I had up. The first dungeon was massive to say the least and it was all connected by teleporters to simulate new areas. Each BSP should be filled before starting another one.

One small, but good, question: Is this going to be earth? Or will it be a different planet?
How many moons/stars/planets will it have in it’s solar system?
Will time take effect on the skybox etc?

Earth-like planet. Two moons. Time’s effect on the skybox doesn’t matter right now.
