Who created Zombie Survival?

  • Invented it myself when gmod9 came out. I was fighting NPC’s on this map where the NPC’s had really good noding and stuff so it was actually fun to play and you could really die. I was thinking ‘hey what if when an NPC killed you and you turned in to one?’ and there’s how it came about. It started as just swapping to the zombie team once you died. One zombie class and I think there was the upgrading system. Ammo was picked up from the map.

  • Well Jetboom, you’ve done an amazing job.  I started playing this around the time that TF2 came out, and since then I’d say my ZS/TF2 playing ratio is about 20:1.  To me this game is much more fun that TF2.  If you could somehow get it out of the deeply nested niche it resides in so it could reach a wider audience I think it would be a huge success.  I wonder if Valve got some inspiration from this game to make Left 4 Dead, which is very similar to ZS but dumbed down to 4 players for the console kiddies.

    Maybe give yourself some credit too with a link on the main page.  Something like ‘What is Zombie Survival?’ or ‘ZS FAQ’ where you can say you made it yourself, how and why.

  • Well forgive me for not knowing the full history of zombie games.  All I know is while watching the video of Left for Dead in action I was just thinking this looks like ZS, but with 4 players instead of 40.  People are really excited about that game.  Most people have no idea we’re already playing something much better thanks to Jetboom.

    Correcton, Team Fortress was a mod for quake, it was then introduced into the half life (GoldSrc) engine and renamed Team Fortress Classic, which was then acquired and commercialised by valve.

    Turtlerock (Counter-Strike/L4D) works for Valve, and Valve employees made TFC, along with DMC, since it originated from Quake’s engine (First TF).

  • Thanks for the corrections.  I was just making the point that the idea of a mod being picked up by valve to make into a full game isn’t that implausible as it’s happened twice before, and that ZS is such a great gaming experience it could be a successful stand-alone retail game like those other two.
