Water eating up too much FPS and a Cubemap problem

  • A few problems I need help with:

    • On my zs_zedders_mall map (recently updated https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=177775589) I have water in 3 spots and they all cause huge fps drops (especially in the fountain area).  Gmod’s Construct map has lots more water and doesn’t cause drops.

Can someone help me optimize those areas (mall fountain, park fountain and Cadeburger deep fryers).  I have eliminated a lot of lights in the area but it could definitely be better.

    • Over the last week I have lost the ability to save cubemaps to my map.  The bsp has no ‘Texture’ type files after compiling and gmod’s console spams “Failed, using default cubemap 'engine/defaultcubemap”.  There was a August update around that time but I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it.

    • I used a texture that caused grass detail sprites (one of these: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/…k_detail_types) to appear wherever the texture was. I liked the look (it was far cleaner than placing prop_details manually), but grass should not have been growing in that location and have changed the texture. I would like to have that look elsewhere but have forgotten how I did it. I think it was a dirt or grass texture in the ‘nature’ group but that is all I can remember.

I don’t know if it was the brush texture or the info_overlay texture I had on top of it.

Anyone know how I did that so I can reproduce it?

  • Do the three water spots cover different levels of height?

Which engine/BSP version are you using to compile the maps in?

    Are you using Windows 10?

Would you object to me having the VMF to give better advise?

They do cover different heights but they are in different visleafs so it shouldn’t matter (I hope).  They can’t ‘see’ each other.

I’m using the current Hammer that comes with Source 2013 Multiplayer.  I’m also viewing it/cubemapping it in the current version of GMOD.

    Basically this setup: http://www.noxiousnet.com/forums/index.php?topic=19061.0

Not sure what or where the version numbers are but everything is current and have had their integrity checked.

    Are you using Windows 10?

    No.

Not at all.  Just give me a poke when you are on.  You are in my friends list.  The Workshop version of the map, even though it was recently updated, is now out of date and you’ll need it.

  • If you could send me a private message with the VMF I can have a look. I’m in a pretty busy period at the moment so if I do go Steam there’s a chance that a message back to me will get lost.

  • Maybe your gameinfo.txt got overwritten in the update? It’s happened to me before. As for the detail props, that info should be in the texture’s vtf file.

@Benjy, what problems would Windows 10 be causing, if any?

  • Some windows 10 systems are crashing on buildcubemaps, there’ll be a patch for it shortly I believe.

I recently replaced my gameinfo.txt with the one listed here http://www.noxiousnet.com/forums/index.php?topic=19061.0

Not sure how that would goof up buildcubemaps though.  the explanation I got at Facepunch was that the August update bugged out cubemapping with maps using the ‘painted’ skybox (which I am).

That being said, I’m still getting big fps drops in the rooms with water.  I was told by a guy named Knifey that I should kill a lot of lights on my map and also remove the detail props bushes I got in the fountain room to fix it.  Neither ideas worked and I’m thinking of re-adding the flag lights because the mall is so dark now.

    Any ideas yet Benjy?

  • I remember you guys saying not to use HDR when compiling.  What was the reason again?

  • Haven’t had the chance to look I’m afraid. Will let you know as soon as I can.
