[Core] Pay for Icons

  • Similar to the Pay for Emotes system, this would allow people to pay and have small .vtf files added for the purpose of creating titles with custom vtf. icons and animated vtf. files.

The files would first have to go through the same approval process as the Pay for Emotes system and meet a size requirement.

The paths to the icon may look like this <img src=noxiousnet/Candence_Lute>

Ingame, it would look something like this.

  • not sure how many files would be considered as a LOT but, if this gets implemented and eventually overused, it might cause a longer download process during the server load. if not, correct me and take this as my +1 to the idea as it’d be a great addition to the customization mass.

Nox only needs to download files once, besides the map.

  • so if the files are enough to give a fresh blood a 24hour loading time it’s coolio because it’s only for once  sounds good to me. get it to action

They added that extra time because each file (there was two files per icon as well) was an HTTP request. The transaction didn’t take much time but each request needs time to start.

That being said, the workshop addon system helps a lot with this. The entirety of the models, custom emotes, etc. downloads from steam as a single file. It’s about 50MB right now, highly compressed. The file size is mostly from obnoxiously huge vtfs on the custom models. The size of the non-user custom emotes are just under 1MB and the entirety of the custom user emotes are just over 4MB (uncompressed). There’s 155 user custom emotes in a single 3.8MB file that you mount when you join the server. Most of the low file size is attributed to them all being less than 5 second long ogg vorbis files.

  • I’d ask that the awardicons come back but this isn’t the topic to do it in.

Instead, I’ll note that I could possibly see this working if the pay-for icons were strictly filtered like Emoter has it. The only issue I can think of would be if someone uploads CP as a bunch of 8x8 icons so you can’t make out what it is as a whole, then uses /label or chat spam to “reconstruct” it ingame. Emoter would have the same issue with MLPITA sounds chopped up, nevermind.

Not to mention that images, unlike sounds, can easily be mapped even when compressed which means they could be grouped to save precious bytes at little to no rendering cost.

Suggested that but idk why Jetboom didn’t implement that yet.(for rtp icons).

I added all the spellicons and awards as pngs. <award> is a new tag as well.

  • I mean put them all in a single file.

You want to map them all because I don’t.
