I bring the Good Word™

    So a few people are working on slowly bringing back the best ever SS13 server. Of course there’s no promise of anything but Dent’s been going at it full steam.

    The more developers we have the faster we can do this, so we need developers. Given that Byond code (DM) is babby mode programming, you can probably manage. We might even help you learn if you’re not an ass. See below if you want to help.

    Here’s some never-have-been-but-probably-would-be-asked questions:

    Q: When’s the server coming back up?
    A: No idea. Don’t ask.

    Q: Can I suggest a feature?
    A: No. You can join the dev team and implement your idea yourself then send it in for review, though.

    Q: What’s going to be different?
    A: Keeping up with the /tg/ base should be easier thanks to Git. Some useless fluff is being removed (nothing that you liked unless you’re severely brain damaged). Some game elements are being rebuilt to better suit the NoX Station gameplay. There’s more but you’ll have to find out about those things yourself heheheeheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    Q: How can I keep up with development, be part of it of just hang out with the devs and other social outcasts?
    A: Mumble is annoying for development but most devs are on it if you want to use that. Ideally you should use IRC. We set up a channel on QuakeNet which is now defunct as we moved to Rizon. Reasons include 1) it hides your hostname/ip by default without Q and +x and 2) it doesn’t suck. You should use HexChat. Here’s the info:

    The useless fluff that’s being removed includes: Atmospherics (almost entirely, all of the pipes and shit) along with Genetics (geneticist is being removed, cloners are kept in medbay and scientists use the DNA Modifiers now; there’s going to be 1 extra scientist and medical officer slot to go with this)

    Lawyers and Cargo Technicians are also likely going to be removed (lel roleplay) and their equipment will be available to the public

    If you have any reasonable objections against the removal of anything listed, reply to this post (or send me a PM,) although realize that when i say atmospherics being removed, I mean the pipes, station area, and job; we’re going to use a different method to keep the air supply going, and removing atmospherics will likely take a massive load off of the server

    lawyer and cargo techs are pretty good jobs. lawyers piss of security and sometimes rescue prisons while cargo techs…well cargo techs can be removed actually. also nothing is more hilarious than a lawyer trying to set up a court case and it totally spins out of control

    also what would it mean for atmospherics to be removed?

  • Also /tg/ changed ling abilities and it blows cock now. I suggest using old /tg/ ling.

    Taking out cargo tech and lawyer is fine with me. Should add barber as a job to replace one  ;)

    Atmos is prettymuch vital for any sort of malf ai, not to mention gas leaks, broken hull would became retardedly annoying with no systems to replace air.
    Also, the old boxstation atmospherics was actually pretty good, at least I would be really sad to see it go.
    Even tho, you could merge atmos tech and engineer jobs.

    Also lawers are occasionally funny just to annoy sec with your sec access and complaining about ridiculous things

    Also, I highly object about removing cargo tech, on the metastation the public autolathe was already horrible (practically free RCD and circular saws for everyone).
    And public supply console would just mean free yellow gloves, and tools, and guns if you steal gun or emiter.

    To be honest I see no gain in actually removing anything unless it somehow broken or not working, it just means that there are less things to do, thus the station will be less interesting.

    I  kinda think that the lel roleplay stuff, and “useless fluff” are the things that actually keep people form being shit, not to mention atmos is vital for fancy things such as making gas chamber for sec, or building a working ling tester.

    Oh yeah about the genetics, while I see public cloners as a good idea, Why not just change the access permissions of the cloning rooms door, I recall that the genetics is already halfway under RD, as RD has access to there.
    There is an issue with actually moving the scanners away, or removing CMO’s access to genetics, you need structural enzymes fix the dna damage of cloned people, or a competent chemist who is actually doing his job.
    So with these changes you really would need to add at least small supply of Clean SE’s and/or Ryetalyn to somewhere in medbay.

    Atmos is one of the most boring antagonist tools.
    Almost nobody ever plays lawyer and nobody ever cares about them.
    Cargo tech is just an assistant with more access; they have no practical function.
    The point is to remove clutter and make room for new stuff we might want to add later.
    You can still make gas chambers without atmos.

    Id still rather see 3 cargo techs armed to tooth, than 20 assistants with same crap.
    And thats basically the function of cargotech, not to mention wearing shorts.

    And I think the boringness is pretty subjective, I find proper atmos sabotage a lot more entertaining than your usual murderboner, not to mention it brings round to the end quickly, instead of dragging it on for ages with half of the people dead or missing.
    But if you must, instead of removing atmos completely, you should at least leave behind a stripped down version of it which would just automatically pump air mix in to the stations atmos piping, and filter gasses.

    You are right about lawyer tho, but i still don’t really see any use removing it unless you are actually replacing their room with new stuff.
    Now its a job that you might take once in a 100 rounds when you feel like being useless, which is still better than nothing.

    if by removing atmos you mean replacing it with psudoatmos that simulates the gasses in an unrealistic way but freeing up server processing then im all for it. but i hope you dont mean just having a station with holes in it and nothing happening

    edit:
    you know what on second thought, removing lawyer, cargo techs, atmos techs and librarians is fine. i originally objected the idea but i see what you are trying to do.

    HOWEVER, make sure the library functionality is still kept so that you could read porn to people. make it like some public, open source library.

  • Removing cargotechs will make the QM feel too lonely. Plus the more loyal cargo technicians the QM has, the easier it is to stop a gray tide. For the glory of Cargonia they must be kept.

    @Zetanor:

    We might even help you learn if you’re not an ass.

    Neat.

  • If you still want to play one of these shitty jobs you can just go to the HoP and get a custom job.
    An Atmos Tech’s job is supposed to be putting out fires, using scrubbers for gas leaks and pulling around tanks to replace air in depressurised areas, literally anyone on the station can already do this with basic access. Setting atmos does barely anything noticable except cause lag and make it extremely easy for one player to fuck up the entire station.

    As someone who played QM most of the time, I usually hated every cargo tech working with me because they would spend points on useless shit like lisa or leave cargo, become braindead or killed, and give someone access to cargo because they are so fucking useless.

    You will hate the 20 assistants and everyone else even more as everyone has access to the public equipment.
    It will be just a race who can spend all the points for their selfish needs.
    Also it will mean that Barman has access to lethal ammo, and tools to shorten his shotgun that crits people in 2 shots, not to mention it also opens crates.

    The old map turned in to shitfest so easily since robust items, yellow gloves and tools were so readily available to everyone.
    And making cargo public will make even more robust things available for everyone to take.

    And it does not just mean free everything from cargo, it also means you can break in to any place in matter of seconds, bolted or not since you can just make RCD.
    Or what the hell, just make holes in to the floor and leak out the air, its not like we have atmos to replace the air anyways.

    Also, from similar discussion before
    @JetBoom:

    So you’re removing things instead of adding things.

    Since when does the crew have access to the ordering computer?

    Since the QM went MIA in the tunnels.

    nobody said theyre taking out QM

  • So you’d rather have a station plagued by fires, lack of power, 90% of the crew dead, and unbreathable air instead of one with simply dead people on it?

  • Administrators

    @deadly:

    Removing cargotechs will make the QM feel too lonely.

    Well I’ve never seen a cargo tech in the cargo bay.

    @jh2.0:

    removing […] librarians is fine

    Not happening because 1) we’re actually going to have books and 2) that’s my job when chaplain is taken.

  • Administrators

    @Pyko:

    You will hate the 20 assistants and everyone else even more

    We’re also adding new jobs and reworking existing ones. There won’t be any assistants unless the server magically becomes popular.

    I’m not really sure about what equipment they are talking about if not the cargo ordering console, shorts?
