Here’s a short guide adapted from when we played the JP/KR server:

    Character creation

Your race and gender do not matter. Race changes your starting stats very slightly. I suggest just being a human. Customize them as you wish. Your name is forced to have a first and last name and offensive names aren’t allowed.

Now you will have to pick your class as well as a primary and secondary skill school. Primary school goes in the left slot, secondary in the right. Your primary school is the one which you can use the Ultimate ability out of as well as other benefits like reduced cooldown/cost/cast time. The secondary school you can only use 4/5 abilities. Remember that you can change class later on (although I don’t suggest multiclassing or spreading XP between them until much later).

Choice 1: Warrior (Main stat is strength, guy in red metal armor)
This guy hits hard, has a lot of health, and a lot of armor. A good warrior can be a real killing machine. The weakness is that your ranged attacks are lacking. Good all around choice, ping is not too much of a factor. Very good for killing mobs. Some people use it as a secondary class to kill mobs with.

    • Weapons: two-handed swords, bow, polearm for power attack (if slayer)
    • Battlebrand (circle icon): Focuses on defense. Has a very good self-heal. Ultimate is invulnerability for a few seconds.
    • Baresark (purple icon): Focuses on speed. Allows you to use Stampede (movement ability) more often. You will be forced to use this regardless of your other skill choice because of how opposite schools work. Ultimate is an AOE blind/knockup/damage around you.
    • Slayer (red icon): Focuses on damage. Extremely good for farming. Has a life leech melee attack. Ultimate is a berserk thing which has passive life steal, attack speed, and crit chance.

Choice 2: Skirmisher (Main stat is dexterity, leather armor with spikes guy)
Great movement abilitites. Escape artist, chaser, burst damage.

    • Weapons: one-handed sword and shield, bow.
    • Duelist (blue icon): Burst melee damage and all around guy you don’t wanna be in melee range with. Ultimate gives you tons of mana, armor, crit chance for a few seconds and resets all skirm cooldowns. Good for sustaining yourself and escaping. Excellent for farming by using the debuff and then spamming arrows on mobs.
    • Deadeye (green icon): Ranged attacks. Has two aoes. Has a “sniper” shot which does lots of damage and kills enemy stamina/mana.
    • Brawler (yellow icon): All movement abilities. You will be forced to use this. Not recommended for your primary school since Duelist can get around quicker by timing his Ultimate.

Choice 3: Elementalist (Main stat is intelligence, red robes guy)
Amazing damage potential. Knockbacks and aoes everywhere. Low health and sustainability so plan to die a lot unless you’re good at the game. Works well with high ping.

    • Weapons: staves, one handed sword and shield but only for parrying.
    • Fire (red firey icon): High damage AOE spam. Ultimate is kinda bad.
    • Water (blue water drop icon): Snare guy but still works well with air since has air resistance debuffs. Ultimate is a huge screen filling AOE which slows, debuffs, and does damage. By using water+air spells in the right order you can have insane burst damage.
    • Air (white icon): Forced to use this. Has a blind, aoe, damage reduction, and knockaway ability. Ultimate is an ability which does lightning damage over time to everyone around you as well as reflecting melee damage.

Choice 4: Primalist (Main stat is wisdom, brown robes guy)
Healer. Good self-sustainability. Decent armor. Good stats. SHIT for killing any sort of medium-hard mob. Only has two schools so far but is getting a debuffer/crowd control class soon.

    • Weapons: staves, 1 handed sword and shield but only for parrying.
    • Law (yellow icon): Self-sustain and spammable small aoe which drains mana/stamina as well as does damage. Ultimate is a big bubble which blocks all projectiles. The bubble stays in place.
    • Life (green icon): Healer. Ultimate is literally a TF2 medigun which makes your target almost invulnerable from health per second. Recommended for support.
    • Chaos (purple icon): Damage, CC, knockups, life leech, ranged gank. Ultimate is a big cloud that damages, silences, blinds, and gives you health. Probably the most OP class in the game but not good for farming and if a group zergs you, you have no way to get away.

Playing and quick level up guide

Our clan is called 5AM Asset Damage. You can join us if you want. Do not kill (unless attacked first) anyone with a green clan name. Type /w Rectum Ragnarok to whisper me or use the clan browser and apply to join. You can join another clan if you want, our clan is small scale and only participates in large sieges as mercenaries so you might not get all the game has to offer.

Prowess, leveling up, making sure you don’t make mistakes

Although you can technically get infinite prowess, it becomes harder to get as you level up more. In addition, skills and stats cost more the higher your current allotted skills are. So it’s important to read a few tips:

    • Put all of your first 1k-2k prowess in to buying your first 3 or 4 class boosters. If you’re warrior, you want to buy The Strong. Elementalist buys The Smart, primalist buys The Wise, skirmisher buys The Agile. You can buy other boosters later. Make sure your booster is enabled when you login. Sometimes after crashes or being offline for a while your booster will come off. Reenable it in the roles menu. Your booster is a status icon under your health bar.

      • Do not level up your secondary school or any skills in your secondary school UNLESS the skill says it will increase magnitude or AOE by leveling it up. Cost, cooldown, and casting time can only be improved if you level up things in your primary school.
      • Do NOT buy the ultimate (3000 prowess) skill for anything except your primary school. You won’t be able to use it.
      • Do not level up, use, or bind Light.
      • If you are a Primalist do not buy Heal Mount. Just use Healing Blast.
      • Only level up your recommended weapon skills for your class (see above). They are recommended because they are objectively the best.
      • Do crafting feats. Even if you don’t use the items, crafting is the best way to get prowess. You can get materials from players you kill (harvesters) or just harvest yourself afk. Keep all crude and other r0 items to salvage. It only costs one gold and you get mats/prowess from it. Materials can also be bought (and sold) on the market.
      • Do the tutorial feats it’s a good amount of prowess.
      • Do not waste your time with goblins, kobolds, zombies, skeletons, and other feats which give you pathetic amounts of prowess despite killing 150 of them. This is a good order of mobs to kill: centaurs, brown bears, swamp hags, ogres, earth elementals, fire elementals, air elementals, ice elementals, cave trolls (dungeon), hill giants (sluggers), dark broods (dungeon), black knights, fire giants.
      • You can salvage an entire bag of items by dragging the bag in to the salvaging box.
      • You must buy a weapon mastery after you get your regular weapon skill to 100. The battlemaster in towns will sell you the skill for 1000 prowess. This skill must also be leveled.
      • You start with 3 skills for every school. You must buy the 4th (1500 prowess) and the ultimate (3000 prowess) from either the battlemaster or the spell master. Remember you can only use the ultimate from your primary school.
      • Read the spell descriptions carefully. Some have extra effects besides just what you see. For example, Frost Bite will add a lightning debuff.
      • Do buy break fall but only after having spare prowess.
      • The best way to get rawhide is from the sewers in the capital cities. These will be swirling black things on your map. The sewers are safe areas so players cannot attack you. In them you will find scumlings. They have their own feats as well as the 1000 varmint feat. Not only do they die in 1 hit, they spawn extremely fast and drop/skin for up to 10 combined rawhide each. Very useful if you wanted to grind out leatherworking.

      Stats

      • Strength: Melee weapon damage. Maximum health. Maximum underwater time (?).
      • Dexterity: Bow damage. Maximum stamina. Melee swing speed. Bow swing speed.
      • Intelligence: Elementalist spell damage. Staff Bolt damage. Maximum mana but only if wisdom isn’t higher.
      • Wisdom: Primalist spell damage. Transfers (mana to stamina + others) and Heal Self magnitude (transfers are about 10.1 per tick at 100 wisdom). Maximum mana but only if intelligence isn’t higher.

Do not buy any points in intelligence if you aren’t an Elementalist.

      Playing Tips

      • Don’t carry anything you don’t want to lose. Bank everything else. ORGANIZE your bank with bags. You can rename bags by right clicking them.
      • Always sprint. Just tap the auto-sprint key when you login and forget about it.
      • Do not use the radial selection. Put your spells in the radial menu slots and then in your options menu bind them to specific keys (or key combinations). Make sure you use Activate Left/Right Radial Slot # instead of just Activate Radial Slot #. Things on your left radial menu will be deselected after casting them once. Things on the right will stay selected after casting them once.
      • You can also bind items to keys. The quick slots are in your paperdoll menu. Always have your weapons bound.
      • Watch your stamina. If you run out you are as good as dead. Attacks deal stamina damage. Some types (ice/lightning/bludgeoning/holy) deal a lot more stam (or mana) damage.
      • Use erratic movements vs. players. Avoid shots instead of trying to tank them. Do not gradually move the mouse, instantly change direction. Do not try backpedaling, jump shot kite if needed.
      • Parrying with a 1hander + shield reduces damage by a lot more than just a weapon.
      • Eating food gives passive health regeneration for its duration. You will also regen stamina if standing still or walking (does not stack with Invigoration).
      • Use rest. If you can rest behind something or if you made some distance then rest can give about 15 stats per second. But watch out because it halves your resistances while resting.
      • Your main damage output as warrior or bow user should be basic attacks, not skills. Spamming skills will screw your stamina/mana.
      • Watch your weight. If you get overweight you will slow down to a crawl making you an easy target. You can delete items in an emergency by dragging them out of your backpack. Mounts are very heavy (100kg) so you can also spawn them. Deleted items appear on your corpse if deleted less than 5 minutes ago.
      • Mob spawns are targets for gank squads so keep ears+eyes open if you’re outside the safe zone. Keep your health above half at all times and your stats at manageable levels. Have a hiding place such as a high up building or spider tree.

If all else fails, ask in mumble or clan chat.

  • Back in my prime I was known as GingerMagicians GreatestFan #2. I would love to play, though I’ll have no idea what I’m doing.

  • This means you’re in the queue. Obviously clicking it cancels the queue. There’s no indication of how long the queue is so just hang in there.

Also the Akamai Downloader that you use to get the game has uploading enabled by default (which is basically like seeding a torrent). I don’t know whether the updater uses components from the downloader so I just disabled the service then renamed the directory Akamai resides in to prevent it from launching at boot (C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\Akamai, it contains a ControlPanel.exe utility to manipulate the service).

  • I just uninstalled akami as soon as I was done downloading the patcher.

  • Can you play it in english? What FTP components does it have?

  • Ya you can play it in english but will see any k/j names and chat as squares. Not that it really matters.

No FTP components yet since it’s in beta but I don’t expect anything too bad.

  • I made it! Time to go run around like an idiot and get myself killed.

Oh and also I have 200 ping from the west coast. I have decent internet though, so I don’t know whats up. I know nothing about port forwarding, could that be it?

  • You’re connecting to a server 6 timezones and several network isolations away what do you expect?

  • Yeah, I was just hoping for something a little lower if people from cali are getting 140.

  • I get this with no indication of what to do:

You should post more starting info.  Don’t you guys have a teamspeak for this?

  • That’s the tutorial window. Just click on it in mouse mode to dock it. Might want to switch to chingchong language to fix it.

But you can kind of make out that it’s instructing you to move while holding the C key.

  • Can you make a temporary mumble room for this?

  • just watching the moonrise

  • FlyVPN free trial works if you can get around how shitty the site is. Just disconnect it same time.

  • are you fucking serious

  • There is a tree on the moon!

  • I can’t connect to the http://darkfall.mgame.jp site.

I’ve used 4 different TCP configs on OpenVPN, all console prompts said successful initiation or whatever.

I’ve also tried using Firefox with the same result.

Edit: Tried another config and got this instead:

  • Checked 2ch’s MMO board and they’re saying it’s down for them too.

  • @JetBoom:

Oh great Japan strikes again well thanks for the free game
