Some ideas to replace Librarian with

  • Let’s face it, the library sucks hard. Wouldn’t people much prefer something way cooler there? Maybe with a way better job behind it? Seriously, with the player base we have we need more jobs, and jobs that allow for multiple people. The library is a good place to find somewhere quiet but there’s already lots of those and, like in Obama’s America, not enough jobs. (zing)

So here’s a few ideas to get the ball rolling. Replace the library and the librarian. You know you want to.

    • Zoo/farm: I’m sure you could come up with better names than these, but since the area is both large and directly next to Botany, this is probably the most sensible idea. Cargo Bay can already order animals, and the code structure for breeding, feeding, taming, and making hostile monsters is already firmly established. Where xenobiology focuses on the end-product results of breeding monsters (slime cores), animal farming is about getting resources from them. In addition both of them could be very well-equipped for animal experimentation.
    • For a farm: Call it the Self-Sustaining Research Department, meant to look into long-term survival on out of the way space stations.  It would be a simple enough matter to stock it with basic animals (cows, chickens, goats) and allow more to be bought from the cargo shuttle. There’s not a whole lot of opportunity for traitors for an animal farm though, unless you want to stuff the clown in a pen and let goats beat him to death. Multiple farming jobs.

    • For a zoo: With this you could have mutliple dangerous or common animals and monsters in safety cages, with blast doors in case things go south and feeding trays to slide food in for the animals. The danger should not be about releasing a massive horde of, say, space carp into the station - they would breed too slowly for that. With this option you have multiple job opportunities as well: Head zookeeper, zookeeper assistants. Way more likely to be used by traitors, since you could throw people in the pens, release hostile space carps, etc.

    • With both, there are lots of options for fun code stuff. For example: the effects of various chemicals on animals in space, or testing the different stages of plasma on animals: solid, liquid, gas. Many departments could use the animals as test subjects (who wouldn’t want to blow up a cow with an R&D bomb?) or just give them out as pets. The zookeeper/animal tender could train them to do simple tasks (or attack people!) or just beat on them until they become hostile to anyone.

    • In addition you could go even further and allow for crossbreeding of species. This would require some fluent coding (I could probably do it myself fairly easily), but the possibilities are limitless. Monkeybears anyone?

    • Garden: Why not replace the whole library with a garden? Here I mean large areas, with benches, trees, a fountain, and so on. Some areas could be left dark to make it a little easier to conspire. Make the doors easily blocked and only one or two cameras inside. You could get Botany to grow plants and then plant them in trays where they won’t grow old and die and people can admire them. Gardener job though is sort of a one-person deal.

    • Training Room: A room for newbs to learn the facets of the game. You could even make a tickbox on the character setup menu that asks if you’re a beginner or not, and if it’s on it will spawn you here instead of in the arrivals shuttle. Here there should be books for guides on all the departments, multiple common items they can screw around with, unfinished doors they can attempt completing (or hacking), etcetera. Could be an Instructor job. The cons of this idea are mainly that the game continually changes and so this area would need to be constantly updated as well, at least with the guides.

    • Search & Rescue Department: A subsidiary of both Medbay and Atmos, the S&R department is responsible for the well-being of humans who stray outside the areas fit for human habitation. Their main job is to bring corpses to Genetics or Botany for cloning, or to bring the injured to Medbay for healing. They can perform on-the-job healing if necessary but they largely lack the tools to do that; if possible the best thing would be to bring a Medic around with them as a team.

    • There are ample ideas that can be floated around for S&R: Portable hoverbeds, portable suit beacon locators, inaprovaline sprays, Search & Rescue EVA suits, and so on. I’d love to code something like a grappling gun that can magnetically attach to items, people, walls, floors, windows, grilles, or space catwalks, and then you can reel it in to either zip yourself towards the target (if the target is a fixed structure), or drag something to you in the case of an item or a person.

Anyway, some pretty sensible ideas I think. Post your own! Library sucks though I ain’t gonna argue about that

You mean people will actually retrieve bodies for genetics?! Dear god.

  • I had a suggestionpost about the library somewhere, let me find it.

The Library… I dunno. Add some cats to it (Old bookstores with cats are the best), throw in copies of all the in-game “How to do X” guides, solicit player-made (That is, submitted to the admins/coders and manually put in. The ability to let players add random books is removed/bad anyway) "Guide to X Job"s to put in so that you can direct new players to do some book-learning instead of consulting a wiki for how to do a job, maybe put in random journals that either have gibberish, useless drivel, or a slim chance of containing a secret recipe/item-location. Jobwise, the Libarian has his eldritch altar, maybe make him a secular counterpart to the Chaplain (Or the Mime to the Chaplain’s Clown) in that he can learn about Cult activities (after they’ve already begun)/Wizard spells being cast with his dark research, perhaps with the same general immunity that a Chaplain has due to previous intense research/exposure to the subjects man-and-clown-kind were not meant to know. Maybe give him some sort of PAI/Soulstone hybrid that gives him a bonded helper spirit.

    • Training Room: This should be added in when you start the game up and gives you a question that if you know how to play a game
    • Farm : Put it in North of Botany/Bar/Chef since they’re for foods.

    • For a zoo: Add in spectator station where people can observe an animal and moves on to the next animal… Like a real Zoo… Like a Baws…

    • Garden: Go call Botany do to the job. Not the station’s job.

    • Search and Rescue (S&R): This already exists, it’s called Medical Doctor. Medical Doctor doesn’t do anything and dicks around in the Medbay while people calls for help for Medbay.

    • Farm/Zoo : No… Just. NO.

  • stop being so fussy, the library is a wasted space that needs to be filled, i vote for the farm/zoo idea

  • Librarian is one of the best jobs. The only reason I never take it is they haven’t created the custom database yet.

  • @DR.:

Only thing people use it for is to read porn over the radio and annoy the hell out of the crew.

  • @Kirbyroth:

What more could you ask from a job? Now all it needs it to be combined with the janitor and you’ll have the greatest threat to mankind since the clown planet was discovered.

    Woody got wood

  • I enjoyed the part where they all died at the end.

  • Instead of destroying the Librarian, give the library a few books to spawn with, and also make a new job, like a News Reporter or Journalist. So that way the news streams can be used by a dedicated job instead of the librarian, detective, or anyone else who stole a camera.

  • @CrazierCaptDice:

make a new job, like a News Reporter or Journalist.

Whenever I play Librarian, I treat it like a Journalist. I snap pictures. Write stories. Some serious, some shitty, some (not) funny. Playing it this way I actually get more involvement with the crew and sometimes am able to capture and prove crimes more frequently than the detective. I highly recommend if you’re going to play it, try that.

That being said though, I do think some changes are in order. I like the ideas about having all the “How To” books. There definitely needs to be a database of some kind and books (plus cat(s)!) in place to make it feel like an actual library. It can be a fun position to play, just takes some imagination and work. The access is pitiful but hey! you’re a librarian.

  • I had an idea for a circus ring leader like guy. He would be able to talk to his pet monkey or other animals and tell them to do tricks. His job would be to entertain the station much like the mime or clown. A giant barrel organ would fit him quite nicely. I dont think that getting rid of any jobs is a good idea though.

Also search and rescue seems like the best idea ever. Turning on suit sensors doesnt seem to do much sometimes.

  • Get some larva to do tricks that be fun to watch till they grow up and eat the ring leader.
